Geography
Isthmus
A narrow strip of land connecting two larger pieces of land.
Sinkholes
A steep sided depression that forms when the cave of a roof collapses.
Mexican Plateau
extends from the United States border in the north to the Cordillera Neovolcanica in the south, and is bounded by the Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre Oriental to the west and east.
Sierra Madre Oriental
from Coahuila south through Nuevo Leon, southwest Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosi, Queretaro, and Hidalgo to northern Puebla, where it joins with the east-west running Eje Volcanico Transversal of central Mexico.
Sierra Madre Occidental
runs north to south, from just south of the Sonora–Arizona border southeast through eastern Sonora, western Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Zacatecas, Nayarit, Jalisco, Aguascalientes to Guanajuato, where it joins with the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Eje Volcanico Transversal (Transverse Volcanic Axis) of central Mexico.
Sierra Madre del Sur
joins with the Eje Volcanico Transversal (Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt) of central Mexico in northern Oaxaca, but is separated from this range further west by the valley of the Rio Balsas and its tributary the Rio Tepalcatepec.
Valley of Mexico
located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The valley contains most of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area,
Mexico City
Located withing The Valley of Mexico
Orizaba
in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It is located 20 km west of its sister city Cordoba, and is adjacent to Rio Blanco and Ixtaczoquitlan, on Federal Highways 180 and 190.
Isthmus of Tehuantepec
the part of Mexico lying between the 94th and 96th meridians west longitude, or the southeastern parts of Veracruz and Oaxaca
Yucatan Peninsula
separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico, with the northern coastline on the Yucatan Channel. The peninsula lies east of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec
Baja California
The state is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by Sonora, the U.S. State of Arizona, and the Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez), and on the south by Baja California Sur. Its northern limit is the U.S. state of California.
