BORDER
An imaginary line that separates states or countries
CLIMATE
The usual weather for a specific area
LATITUDE
Lines that measure degrees north or south of the equator
LONGITUDE
Parallel lines that measure distances east or west of the Prime Meridian
PRIME MERIDIAN
An imaginary line found at Zero degrees Longitude
EQUATOR
An imaginary line found at zero degrees latitude.
LAKE ERIE
A Great Lake that is to the WEST of New York
LAKE ONTARIO
A Great Lake that is to the NORTH of New York
HUDSON RIVER
A river flowing from Albany to New York Harbor
LONG ISLAND SOUND
The body of water directly north of Long Island
ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS
A large, northern mountain range. Part of the Appalachian Mountains.
CATSKILL MOUNTAINS
A small, southern mountain range. Part of the Appalachian Mts.
FINGER LAKES
A western area of NYS known for long, thin lakes
ERIE CANAL
A canal built in the 1800’s that connects the Hudson River to Lake Erie. It helped NY become very rich.
PORT
a place where ships or boats bring their goods to trade
BIOME
geological areas of the earth such as rain forest, tundra, taiga, grasslands, desert, temperate forest
STRAIT
a narrow body of water connecting two larger bodies of water
