archipelago
a group of islands
bay
a large body of water connected to an ocean or sea usually surrounded by land
gulf
a large bay that is an arm of an ocean or sea
isthmus
a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas, usually with water on either side. Canals are often built across them.
island
any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Made by physical processes of the earth such as deposition and volcanic activity.
lake
a body of still water of considerable size located in a basin. Lakes are inland and not part of the ocean and therefore are different from lagoons and are larger and deeper than ponds.
peninsula
a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.
river
a natural flowing body of water flowing towards an ocean, a lake, sea, or another river. Usually freshwater.
strait
a narrow waterway that connects two larger, navigable bodies of water
