Types of Biodiversity

Geography
What is the definition of biodiversity?
The total number of genes, species and ecosystems in a given area.
What is species diversity?
The variety of flora and fauna species in an ecosystem.
Why is a variation in the species of an ecosystem needed?
So the ecosystem can carry out its functions
What is ecosystem diversity?
The number of ecosystems in a given area.
What is genetic diversity?
The different types of genes present in a species, eg breeds of dog.
Why is genetic diversity needed?
Not everyone will be vulnerable to the same diseases, eg not everyone in Europe died of the black plague because of blood type variations.
What is an advantage of measuring genetic diversity?
It can determine a species’ resistance to pests or diseases.
What is a disadvantage of measuring genetic diversity?
It is hard and expensive to determine and may require genetic sequencing.
What is an advantage of measuring species diversity?
Tells you whether or not the ecosystem is functioning and diverse
What is a disadvantage of measuring species diversity?
Removing a species from the trophic level unbalances the ecosystem
What is an advantage of measuring ecosystem diversity?
It covers a range of environments
What are the disadvantages of measuring ecosystem diversity?
There may be overlap between ecosystems so it is unreliable if different people define ecosystem; large scale so some details may be missed.
